If there is one thing worse than acne, it has to be oily skin. Millions of individuals are affected by oily skin and the search for the most effective oily skincare products seems as elusive as the Ogopogo.

Our skin normally secretes small amount of oil. This oil is beneficial in more ways than one. It helps to moisturize and also protects against many bacteria from infiltrating the skin. Because this oil is a normal part of our daily body function, treatment against excessively oily skin is difficult. While there are many oily skincare products, the majority are not effective.

For some people treatment of oily skin care has been a great disappointment. Many individuals believe that buying the most expensive product on the market is the answer. This is not true. The basics of treating an oily skin should start at home.

You can significantly reduce the amount of oil on the skin using a common sense approach. Wash your face at least 2-3 times a day and wipe gently. Use a non fragrant soap since too many chemicals in the soap can lead to irritation. Just before bedtime, apply a few drops of an astringent and wipe the face with a cotton ball. You may even use lemon juice to clean the skin. If you do get acne, never squeeze or break the pimples. You can end up with a scar and even spread the acne. Worse, dirt can now get inside the broken skin.

On the other hand excessive washing can lead to dry skin. Do not use alcohol based products because even though effective, the alcohol can remove all the oil from the skin and lead to peeling, dryness and blistering. For some people excessive oily skin is associated with certain foods. So try and avoid foods which are rich in fats. Spicy and hot foods can also aggravate oily skin. Once you have tried these basic oily skin care measures you will definitely see a reduction in the grease.

For those who continue to have a greasy skin, the next step is to use an oily skin care cleansing product. Because there are so many oily skincare products out there, it is important to choose the right one. For the most effective treatment, look for oily skin care creams which contain kaolin, shea butter or allantoin. While these products are slightly more expensive, they are proven to work and will save you a lot more money in the long run.

To reduce the size of your pores, tomatoes, which are a natural astringent, will automatically retract the pores and decrease the amount of oil allowed to come out. A tomato lotion can be used daily to decrease the natural size of your pores. Mix 1 tablespoon of tomato juice with a couple drops of limejuice. Apply this to the face and leave for 15 minutes. Rinse off with tepid water to reveal smaller pores.

            To remove skin rashes mix a tomato with plain yogurt. Yogurt is a natural antibacterial due to the live cultures within it. Spread the mixture on your face or any other area of skin rash. Leave for 20 minutes and then rinse with warm water. Do this 2-3 times a day to see a difference.

            When you get a sunburn, the painful feel and red look are the most important things that you want to reduce as soon as possible. Tomatoes can be used to reduce the pain and swelling that comes with a sunburn. By mixing tomatoes and buttermilk you can remove the top layer of dead skins and sooth the painful burn. Mix 2 teaspoons of tomato juice with 4 tablespoons of buttermilk. Apply to the burnt areas and remove after 1 1/2 hours. Apply as frequently as needed until pain, swelling and redness disappear.

            Lastly, a dull complexion reduces the healthy, natural young appearance of the face. To revive the skin and give it back that healthy glow mix tomato and honey to refresh the skin and bring it back to life. Honey is a natural antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, which does wonders for the skin. Mixed with tomato juice and applied to the skin for 15 minutes at a time, a dull complexion will be increasingly brightened. Rinse with warm water and pat the skin dry.

Those that suffer from oily skin, know it’s a challenge to care for. However, skin oil production is 100 percent natural due to the sebaceous glands found in the skin’s middle layer. These natural oils make sure the skin stays moist and elastic. For some people however, these glands generate way too much oil, which causes them to have oily skin.

Is Your Skin Excessively Oily?

Look at a teenager and you’ll notice that they have oily skin. Why? Their hormones are in full swing so oily skin is a natural side effect of becoming an adult. However, if you have passed those years, there are additional ways to determine if you have oily skin. First, look at yourself in the mirror. Do you have a sheen in the region of the T-zone? This T-zone begins between your eyes, extending down the nose to the chin and running horizontally across the bridge of the nose.

You can notice the sheen usually in the morning and if it’s visible, then you probably have oily skin. If you’re not sure whether you have a sheen, look in the mirror again. Does your hair look oily? Do you wear makeup and have to constantly reapply it within a couple of hours? Do you find yourself blotting at your skin constantly with powder or handkerchief? These are all key indicators of having oily skin.

While blemishes such as blackheads or pimples can occur because of oily skin, they can also appear when you become stressed. Bear in mind that oily skin isn’t just on your face but also your back, chest, arms, neck and shoulders.

Caring For Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, you will need to find the best skin care products to use. The worst way to handle it is to do away completely with the oils. While they may cause issues for your complexion, these oils are highly important. After all, they are a natural moisturizer. Keep in mind this type of skin is rather sensitive so the idea is to control the oil, not remove it entirely.

Don’t use abrasive soap to wash the oil off. All this does is to encourage the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. They’ll automatically want to replace the oil you take away, which could result in a bigger problem.

Clean your skin every day to keep the pores open and healthy. If you fail to do so, dead cells, bacteria and dirt will get in; they’ll clog the pores and cause blackheads and pimples. You can also use a non-alcohol toner to help you out.
